A longtime member of the American Legion Post 312 and the VFW #8813, he served in leadership roles in both organizations and was a strong advocate for Veterans. Allen completed a Tough Mudder course in 2013 with his daughter, raising money for the wounded warrior project. He spearheaded efforts to restore the cemetery and to construct veterans monuments at Riverside Cemetery in Peshtigo.
After his military service Allen had many careers including working as a farmer, machinist, bridge tender, and operating engineer. He was a very gifted tinkerer.
After retiring from employment with Marinette County, Allen found time to travel, garden and volunteer. He participated in humanitarian trips to Haiti and Antigua to help those affected by disaster.
Allen met his wife, Linda, of 19 years in Peshtigo where they made their home. In addition to his love for the outdoors Allen was an aviation and motorcycle enthusiast. He was a lifelong EAA member and enjoyed attending the annual event. He enjoyed taking trips on his motorcycle across the U.S. and Canada and collected all things Harley Davidson.
Allen's involvement in community affairs resulted in his being awarded the Peshtigo Area Chamber of Commerce Richard Roland Person of the Year Award in 2014, Legionnaire of the Year. Allen was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Allen is survived by his wife, Linda; 3 sons, Steve, Rob and Jodi; 2 daughters, Jackie (Russ) and Jami; a sister, Joan Hetcher; grandchildren, nieces; nephews and other relatives and countless friends.
